Free Government Phones

Blue Wireless - Free Government Phones

Blue Wireless is a small regional telephone service provider that participates in the federal Lifeline program. As such they are able to provide free Smartphones for qualified individuals. While their cell phone coverage is nationwide, their customer base is located within certain zip codes of the New York and Pennsylvania area.

Blue Wireless Lifeline Plans

In addition to providing free government Smartphones that include the usual features of caller ID, voice mail, call waiting, 3-way calling and 911 calls, they also offer three flavors of plans. The plans are called B-Line Basic, which is the completely free Lifeline plan. Then there’s B-Line Plus and B-Line Premium. The B-Line Plus and Premium charge a monthly fee. The service plans as follows:

B-Line Basic:

500 MB Data | Unlimited Texting | 1,000 Talk Minutes: Cost = $0

B-Line Plus

750 MB Data | Unlimited Texting | Unlimited Talk: Cost = $10/month

B-Line Premium

2 GB Data | Unlimited Texting | Unlimited Talk: Cost = $20/month

Unlike other free government cell phone plans, Blue Wireless doesn’t appear to offer “Top Up” options. You might want to check with their customer service representative to see if you can purchase additional air time or data if you use up your monthly allotment before the end of the month.

Qualifying for Blue Wireless Lifeline

To participate in the Lifeline program, you must have a household income at or below 135% of the federal poverty guidelines. Or, you or someone in your household must participate in one of the following government assistance programs:

  • Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
  • Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
  • Blue Wireless B-Line
  • Medicaid
  • Federal Public Housing Assistance
  • Tribal-specific programs:
    1. Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
    2. Tribally-Administered Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TTANF)
    3. Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
    4. Head Start
  • Veterans Pension and Survivors Benefit Programs

Once you meet the qualification criteria and have the necessary documentation to prove it, it’s time to enroll in the Blue Wireless Lifeline plan.

Blue Wireless Lifeline Enrollment Process

Different from the many other Lifeline phone providers, Blue Wireless is unique in that applicants must visit one of the store locations to enroll. Therefore, gather the necessary documentation and visit the nearest Blue Wireless store.

Once there, complete the application and submit it with the necessary documentation. Upon approval, you’ll receive your phone and service plan. Your phone service plan is good for one year. Near the end of the year you must re-certify to prove that you’re still eligible for Lifeline benefits.

Lifeline Tips

  1. Make sure to use your phone service at least once every 30 days. Not using your service may cause you to be de-enrolled from the benefit.

  2. Only one lifeline phone service per household
