Starry Wireless - Affordable Connectivity Plans

Starry Wireless is an internet service provider that is looking to solve some of the existing internet problems. They consider their service “next-generation wireless technology.” They continue to upgrade and innovate to make it faster and more reliable. They offer this technology for a discount to those who qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).

Their internet plans include everything necessary to access the Internet. In other words, no hidden costs for extra equipment. Since they mount their antennas atop skyscrapers and radio towers to transmit internet service across the designated area, they do not use inground network cables. To maintain high-quality service and internet connection, they currently only offer services in a few select locations as listed below:

Their service area is growing one neighborhood at a time. If you live in an area that is not currently serviced by Starry, chat with your building owner. The building owner can complete a form and request Starry to connect to your building.

What Starry Offers

Since Starry designs and installs each piece of its hardware, they are meticulous to make sure it works as it should. Because each metro area and building is different, Starry offers location-specific plans. The plans range in price from $15 per month up to $80 per month as follows:

As mentioned earlier, plans vary based on location. For example, in one location in Quincy, Mass, they offer Starry Plus, Starry Pro and Starry Gigabit, while in a Los Angeles California location they offer Starry Connect, Starry Select and Starry Plus. Some locations in NYC only have one plan to select from and that’s Starry Plus.

If you’re interested in signing up with Starry as an ACP participant, first check to see if Starry offers service at your address. If the answer is yes, then see if you qualify for ACP.

Affordable Connectivity Discount

If you qualify for the Affordable Connectivity Program, you can apply up to a $30 per month discount to any of the above plans (Up to $75 per month if you live on qualified Tribal Lands, but I don’t think Starry currently offers service on Tribal Lands). Needless to say, if you want free internet service, select either Starry Connect or Starry Select plan.

Qualify for Affordable Connectivity Benefits

To qualify for the ACP you have to meet the eligibility criteria. The criteria are as follows:

Have a household income of 200% or below the Federal Poverty Guidelines or,

You or someone in your household receives benefits from one of the following government assistance programs:

Enrolled in Lifeline
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
Medicaid
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Federal Public Housing Assistance (FPHA)
Veterans and Survivors Pension Benefit

Additional programs for individuals/households living on qualified Tribal lands:

Bureau of Indian Affairs General Assistance
Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR)
Tribal Head Start
Tribally-Administered Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF)

Signing up for Starry Internet Service

After meeting the criteria, go to the National Verifier [INSERT LINK] website and apply. Once approved by the National Verifier, which should only take about 20-30 minutes if you have the necessary documents handy, then go to Starry to sign up. It appears that the signup process requires you to contact Starry support either via phone (888-231-9403) or email (support[at]starry[dot]com).

Starry will buy out your old contract up to $200. If you are hit with an early termination fee from your previous service provider, Starry will reimburse you via account credit.

ACP Rules to Note

Once approved for benefits, you must recertify annually to prove you are still eligible for the program

Only one ACP benefit per household

If you move, the Affordable Connectivity Program requires you to notify your service provider within a specified number of days. However, with Starry Wirreless, it is even more important to notify them of an impending move since their services are location specific. Moving to a new location where they do not provide services means you’ll have to search for a different ACP internet provider.
