District of Columbia: Listing of Free Govt Phone Providers
Thanks to the Federal Lifeline program, eligible low-income residents in the District of Columbia can get help with their phone bills. There are two options:
While most phone service providers can offer the discounted landline option (call your current landline company and ask), not all wireless providers offer free phones.
However, with the creation of the Federal Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP) more phone companies are offering either a free device or a deep discount towards the purchase of a device such as a tablet, laptop or computer. The plans vary from company to company so take your time and choose the right company and plan for you.
Below is a listing of services providers that offer either Lifeline and or ACP benefits in the District of Columbia:
This list is not a comprehensive listing of all free phone providers in District of Columbia. As we come across more providers, we will update the list.
Iowa Factoid: According to the Universal Service Administrative Company (USAC), as of October 2022, only 14% of the 335,058 households eligible to participate in the Lifeline program have actuall y enrolled. That means that 86% of the Iowa population is struggling unnecessarily to pay cell phone and internet bills.
If you know of anyone who could benefit from this program, please share this with them.
